The Dark Divine Author Visit

Posted by: Sprtygal   in Other books

Author Bree Despain, of The Dark Divine was kind enough to hang out with us last Saturday for book club. The evening started off with our own version of “Turkey a la King” and an entire Thanksgiving feast. After dinner we played games such as “I wish I would have had a cell phone” moment, soap carvings (to create our own sculpture garden), and a Purple Passion Pedicure contest (we made Bree judge the winner).

Bree told us some fabulous stories of what first got her interested in writing, how the idea for the book came about, her process getting it published and other fun things. We even got to have a fantastic Q&A about The Dark Divine and also just her life as a wife, mom, and author. The evening was a sure hit when Bree finally pulled her phone out of her bag only to realize it was past 11 and she had no idea it’d gotten that late.

Fan Trips just announced they’re bringing their popular Vampire Baseball to Salt Lake City Utah. It’s schedule to happen on May 22, 2010. You can find more details on their website. Tickets go on sale this coming Friday and help benefit the Special Olympics of Utah. A handful of cast members from the movies Twilight and New Moon will be there to go head to head against Olympic Athletes as SLC was the place of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Sounds like a good time to us! You can bet the SLTA will be there to help out and root on the players.

Author Sydney Salter at our bookclub

Posted by: Sprtygal   in Other books

Sydney wrote My Big Nose and Other Natural Disasters about a high school girl named Jory who is boy crazy and insecure about her nose. It’s a hilarious book that I really enjoyed reading!

Debbie had us all take a little survey about high school and then we won prizes depending on our outrageous answers. We got to ask Sydney Salter all sorts of questions about her book, the business, her new book Jungle Crossing, and much more. It was a really enjoyable evening. So much in fact we forgot to get a group picture.

I snagged this photo from Sydneys blog and the cake was part of our delicious snacks. Debbie’s sister Heather whipped up this Wedding Cake, gorgeous right?

Ally Condie – Freshman for President

Posted by: Dano   in Other books

sltaallycondie-004c

It was fun going all out on red, white and blue. The book we read was called Freshman for President. Ally Condie has also written a handful of other books including Yearbook, Reunion, and First Day.

We asked her all sorts of questions about her writing process and how she is able to make it work for her and her family. She also told us some fun stories about other authors she’s met through sharing the same publishers. She was super sweet and kind and it was a blast to get to hang out with her.

The Ellen Degeneres Show

Be a Part of the Show
Attention “Twilight” Fans!

Do you love the “Twilight” series of books and films? Are you counting the days ’til the release of “New Moon”? If so, we want to hear from you! Enter here and tell us exactly what makes you “Twilight’s” biggest fan!

How would you address the questions above with only 1500 characters? Our president Danylle gave it a try. Tell her what you think about her application to be on the Ellen Degeneres Show. What was good? What was down right frightening? Should she stick to her day job?

Does Biggest Twilight Fan refer to a Twilight weight loss program on ELLEN DEGENERES SHOW? Please sign me up so I can fit into my Volturi Masquerade Ball gown at TwiCon2009 this July.
What Twilight fan doesn’t own two complete Twilight Saga sets -all eight signed by Stephenie Meyer who recognizes me on sight, and also for my unique and identifiable fan girl scream. It only takes two trips to Phoenix, one to Los Angeles and four to Salt Lake City to achieve this feat over four years. I would love a signed copy of Ellen’s book to add to my Twilight Collection. Would Ms Degeneres like a signed copy of the Entertainment Weekly issue where I’m quoted using eloquent language like “crap” http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20152943_20153269_20243109_5,00.html
I saw the Twilight Movie at an advanced screening, and still attended a Midnight Movie release party dressed for the Prom. I quickly changed into my La Push sweats to enjoy the show. For the midnight DVD release, I ran to Borders for the best DVD version, and WalMart to meet Rachelle Lefevre.
As Salt Lake Twilighters Anonymous president, I’ve traveled to Forks, Washington in search of vampires, and scoured the beautiful beaches of La Push for werewolf tracks- I only found discarded clothing. I once traveled 1,000 miles for a Twilight Book club, and won the grand prize for creating a Jacob/werewolf Doll. I’ve been interviewed in newspaper articles and have appeared on TV a total of five times. I helped organize and decorate a Christmas tree entitled “A Cullen Christmas” which sold for $4,000 to benefit the Primary Children Medical Center’s Festival of Trees. Visit www.theslta.com to learn more or have me on the show, it’s just that easy.

Four members of the SLTA flew down to Tempe, Arizona to participate in a musical performance, a panel discussion from a fantatic mix of YA authors, a raffle, a live auction, and a private reception with said authors all for the charity event PROJECT BOOK BABE. Thanks go out to member Alysa from Everead who gave us the heads up.

You can read a great recount of the event from various sources:
The Twilight Lexicon’s PEL gives a fist hand recount of the Event. Part 1 here and part 2 here

Shannon Hale, author of Goose Girl, Princess Academy, and my favorite Austenland, blogs about her experience as the MC of the event.

Here are a few of my memorable quotes from the panel discussion.

When asked what kind of person they were before they became successful authors:

  • Brandon Mull described himself as a nerd who read books, now he’s an author who writes books for nerds to read.
  • Laini Taylor said she was the good girl who never caused her parents any trouble. She waited until she was 35 to dye her hair pink.

When asked the defining moment when they knew they had become a writer:

  • J.S. Lewis exited the stage in mock humor.
  • Stephenie Meyer claims she still doesn’t see herself as a writer.
  • James A Owen always knew he was a writer. He then told a story when he was six years old and wrote illustrated stories of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. He distributed them around the neighborhood with his red wagon. A few years ago he noticed that particular rendition of Goldilocks by Jimmy Owen was being auctioned on EBay (apparently his best friend was cleaning out his mother’s house). James A Owen got into a bidding war and lost. The winner wouldn’t give it up because “he needed it to complete his James A Owen collection.”

Janette Rallins advised aspiring writers to never be afraid of their most embarrasing moments, since most of her best material came from real life experiences.

When asked about writing techniques, Chris Gall told us he  likes to come up with the title of the book first. Then he draws cover art to go with that title and after he’s finished with that bit of creative genius he’s at a lost for what should actually go inside the book.

Laini Taylor inspired all writers to believe in themselves and to write the story down even if it never gets published.

Shannon Hales said something about vomit… I’m not quite sure where she was going with that but I’m sure it was profound.

Our very favorite author, Stephenie Meyer, shared a unique experience with us about her trip up to Vancouver where the cast for New Moon movie is filming. Aparently the Wolf Pack has a pretty rigous workout and makeup schedule to keep their six packs in prime condition.

Arizona’s Channel 12 news covered this amazing event in the video below. See if you can pick out the SLTA members in the crowd shots.

Thanks go out to the wonderful organizers, volunteers, and authors for such a spectacular event. Our well wishes and prayers go out to The Book Babe herself. Keep up the fight Faith we’re cheering you on here in Salt Lake.

This Saturday April, 4, 2009 members of the SLTA will be flying down to Phoenix Arizona to participate in a charity fundraiser for the Book Babe.

Many wonderful authors, artists, and musicians will be attending with plenty of signed books to be given away .

In addition to a  program of lively musical performances and an 12 person author panel, there will be a LIVE AUCTION:.
Stephenie Meyer is generously donating some exciting items to auction LIVE AT THE EVENT ON APRIL 4th, including her dress from the Eclipse Prom:
Forever Dawn Epilogue

Join us at 10:00pm Friday March 20th

132 E. Winchester (Across from Fashion Place Mall)borders2

‘Twilight’ Fans Will Fly to Borders March 20 for Midnight DVD Release Parties
“Borders Twilight Movie Awards,” trivia, raffles and more await fans

ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 11, 2009 —“Twilight” fans are invited to Borders stores nationwide March 20 as the retailer rolls out the red carpet beginning at 10 p.m. to host special “Twilight” DVD release parties featuring the “Borders Twilight Movie Awards,” created in collaboration with Summit Entertainment, the film’s producers. The movie’s biggest fans will select the winners of the “Borders Twilight Movie Awards” at each Borders store in 10 categories, such as “Best Bella-Edward Moment,” “Best Vampire” and “Best OME (Oh My Edward) Moment.” To cast their votes, fans simply download a ballot at www.bordersmedia.com/twilight, complete it and bring it with them to the midnight release party. Award category winners will be announced at the end of the evening, but not before fans can view a specially created DVD from Summit Entertainment featuring an exclusive videotaped message from the “Twilight” cast welcoming everyone to their local “Borders Twilight Movie Awards” ceremony. All movie ballots collected will be entered into a “Moments of Twilight Raffle,” sponsored by Summit Entertainment.

In addition to the “Borders Twilight Movie Awards,” fans will have a great time enjoying a host of activities designed specifically for die-hard “Twilight” followers:

• Vampire Baseball-themed “Twilight” Trivia Sponsored by Twilight Lexicon —Fans won’t need a bat, ball or superhuman strength to participate in this event. Two teams will go head-to-head in nine innings of mind-twisting “Twilight” trivia. In the bonus “Grand Slam Lightning Round,” fans can really show their “Twilight” prowess when they answer trivia questions supplied by Twilight Lexicon. At the end of the game, one MVP—“Most Vampiric Player”—will be selected from each team.
• “Twilight” Scavenger Hunt —Twilighters should come prepared to scour their Borders store for “Twilight”-themed clues. A passion for winning and an extensive knowledge of all things “Twilight” are requirements for this “vampirific” activity that is sure to get the adrenaline pumping.
• “Moments of Twilight Raffle” Drawing Sponsored by Summit Entertainment—Just before the “Twilight” DVD officially goes on sale, Borders will draw 10 winning ballots from all who entered locally and present each person who submitted the ballot with an exclusive photo card provided by Summit Entertainment. Each photo card, direct from the Borders exclusive “Twilight” DVD, features an iconic image of the “Twilight” cast from the movie. Raffle winners will be encouraged to share their favorite “Twilight” movie moment with the crowd of fans gathered at the store.

Leaders of the Most Popular Fan Sites to Celebrate at Borders
The superfans behind the top fan sites – Web sites like Twilight Lexicon, Twilight Series Theories and TwilightLive – recognize that Borders stores will be the places to be on Friday night, March 20, as they count down the final minutes until the DVD goes on sale. On the big night, only Borders will host five of the nation’s leading fan sites as they help us celebrate the release of “Twilight” on DVD. Webmasters of the following sites will appear at Borders stores:
• Twilight Series Theories at Borders in Allen, Texas
• Twilight Lexicon and TwilightLive at Borders – Penn Plaza in New York City
• Twilight Lexicon at Borders – Westend in Nashville, Tenn.
• TwilightSource and Twilight Facebook at Borders in Westwood, Calif.

At the Penn Plaza and Nashville parties, leaders from Twilight Lexicon will participate in the festivities by challenging attendees to correctly answer trivia questions they created during the “Grand Slam Lightning Round” of Vampire Baseball-themed “Twilight” Trivia.

Borders’ Exclusive “Twilight” DVD
While supplies last, Twilighters can purchase an exclusive Borders two-disc, limited-edition copy of the “Twilight” DVD presented in a deluxe tri-fold rigid case. The front cover features a pattern of tree branches foil-stamped on the matte finish packaging, creating a beautiful tone-on-tone image that highlights the movie’s logo. Upon its release, the Borders-exclusive two-disc “Twilight” DVD will be $29.99, a savings of 25% off the retail price of $39.99.

The exclusive DVD, available for purchase while supplies last, has a number of special bonus features that fans can find nowhere else except Borders, including:
• Exclusive interviews with Robert Pattinson (Edward), Kristen Stewart (Bella), Cam Gigandet (James), Edi Gathegi (Laurent) and Rachelle Lefevre (Victoria) that were recorded during Comic-Con in San Diego.
• Exclusive red-carpet footage from the global movie premiere in Los Angeles, and a re-edited version of the Borders Book Club episode that features author Stephenie Meyer discussing the phenomenon behind the Twilight Saga.
• A set of 10 exclusive photo cards, which feature images of the cast. The 7-1/4-inch-by-5-3/8-inch photo cards are printed on a heavy pearlescent stock, giving the cards a rich, beautiful shimmer. The DVDs and photo cards will be elegantly presented in a deluxe tri-fold rigid case that is exclusive to Borders.
Customers who want to purchase the Borders exclusive limited-edition DVD at the parties should arrive early to receive a wristband, which guarantees the opportunity to purchase the special DVD. Most stores will begin distributing wristbands when they open the morning of March 20 and will only provide wristbands for as many exclusive DVDs as are available for purchase at the store. Again, because supplies of the exclusive DVD are limited, customers are encouraged to come to the stores early to receive a wristband. If customers are unable to receive a wristband, they can, of course, purchase the regular “Twilight” DVD.

“We have put together an amazing line-up of activities and entertainment for our ‘Twilight’ DVD midnight release parties,” said Anne Kubek, executive vice president of Merchandising and Marketing for Borders Group. “These activities were designed with the true fan in mind—the customer who lives and breathes all things ‘Twilight.’ From the parties, to the books, to an extensive selection of ‘Twilight’ products, to the soon-to-be-released Borders exclusive limited-edition DVD, we are truly the headquarters for all things ‘Twilight’ and we intend to throw great in-store parties that fans will remember for years to come.”

Additional “Twilight”-themed Products
In addition to the DVDs, Borders offers an incredible selection of “Twilight”-themed items, including a Borders exclusive 18-month “Twilight” calendar featuring beautiful movie stills as well as t-shirts, jewelry, posters, bookmarks, an Edward action figure and, of course, the Twilight Saga—“Twilight,” “New Moon,” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn.” All of these “Twilight”-related products are gathered in one sweeping display at the front of our stores that is sure to attract shoppers thirsty for vampire memorabilia.

Our dear friend Maria Carr from At Home With Maria has created a youtube channel filled with some of her favorite segments. Fortunately for the SLTA, our Festival of Trees and Twilight Fun segment made the list. You can check out other great ideas with Maria at youtube.com/athomewithmaria.

Or you can watch the segment below. Thanks go out to not only the Festival of Trees and At Home With Maria for the opportunity to share our love of Twilight with others, but to all the wonder SLTA members who worked so tirelessly to create a beautiful gift of love for the children of Primary Children’s Medical Center.

A few members of the SLTA will be attending TWICON.
next summer and volunteering on various convention committees.

Evil Iguana Productions has a great video up about why you should attend TWICON.

This video is great if you are single, a male, and need convincing. But for others the opportunity to meet and mingle with the stars of the Twiight Movie, not to mention all the Who’s Who in the Twilight Fandom will be just as amazing as dressing up in vintage ball gowns and dancing at the Volturi Masque Ball.
